Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique that encourages the movement of fluid through the lymphatic system - a network of vessels, organs and tissues - and back into the circulatory system. As a vital part of our immune system, our lymphatic system protects from infection, destroys old or abnormal cells, removes foreign particles (dust, for example), and maintains fluid balance. MLD can be applied to the whole body or to specific areas. It is repetitive, light, and soothing in nature which promotes relaxation and stimulates pain-inhibitory reflexes.
Some conditions that can be treated effectively using MLD include: migraines, muscle sprains and strains (swelling), bruising, burns and scars, and pre/post surgery (MLD can be used almost immediately following surgery to reduce swelling, decrease pain, and promote healing of the tissues).

Combined Decongestive Therapy is used to treat lymphedema and chronic venous insufficiency. MLD massage is followed by the application of compression bandaging. This treatment is often used to reduce fluid volume in preparation for the fitting of a compression garment. Mandy will be offering this treatment option in the new year (Jan 2025).

Contraindications for using MLD include: congestive heart failure/cardiac insufficiency, kidney disease, liver disease, or an acute infection.
